Yes, and better than that
Every current clinic booking system lets a patient choose a practitioner and, for multi-site clinics, a location. That is the baseline. The better answer is that on a well-built website the patient has usually already chosen both before they reach the booking widget, because the page they are on has told the system who and where. Here is how each works and how the site does the choosing.
How the systems handle it
Cliniko. The booking flow is location, then appointment type, then practitioner (or "any"), then time. URL parameters pre-select any of the first three, so a link can open directly on "Northside, Physiotherapy Initial, Sam" and show only Sam's Northside slots.
Jane. The hosted booking page lets patients filter by discipline, treatment and staff member; deep links open the page on a specific discipline or practitioner. Multi-location clinics have a location selection, also deep-linkable.
Nookal. The widget supports location, practitioner and service pre-selection via parameters, and can be embedded per location page with the location fixed.
All three support an "any practitioner" or "first available" option alongside named choice.
How the website pre-selects
Every Book button carries the most specific choice the page implies:
- Practitioner profile: that practitioner, their initial appointment, their primary location.
- Location page: that location; practitioner open.
- Service page: that service; practitioner open, or the practitioners who provide it.
- Condition page: the usual service; practitioner open, with the practitioners who treat it listed above with their own Book-with buttons.
- Home page: nothing fixed, or the new-patient assessment.
The patient on Sam's profile taps Book and sees Sam's diary. The patient on the Northside page taps Book and sees Northside's diary. The choice was made by navigating; the widget only asks for a time.
Helping the patient who does not know
Some patients do not know which practitioner or which location suits them. Three provisions:
Practitioner guidance on the pages. Each profile says who they are best for; each condition page names who treats it and why you might pick each. Reception writes these lines; they know.
A "first available" path. "Not sure who to see? Book an initial assessment with the first available practitioner and we will match you." A Book button pre-selecting the generic assessment type with practitioner set to any. One tap, no decision.
Location by proximity. For multi-site clinics, the home page and the booking page show locations with suburbs and a map link, and the location pages carry the suburb in their titles so patients arrive at the right one from search. A "which clinic is nearest?" line with the two or three addresses handles the rest.
Continuity for returning patients
Returning patients usually want the same practitioner. Their confirmation and reminder messages include a "book your next appointment with Sam" link that pre-selects Sam. Practitioner profiles are the page reception sends when a patient asks how to rebook. Jane and Cliniko patient accounts remember the last practitioner.
When a practitioner is away or leaves
The systems handle availability: an away practitioner shows no slots. The website handles the rest: a note on the profile ("Sam is on leave until [date]; Jo is covering her patients") and the relationship fields reassigned so condition pages point to the covering practitioner. When someone leaves, their record is unpublished and their Book links disappear everywhere at once.
Multi-location specifics
- A page per location with its own structured data, hours, photos and the practitioners who work there with days.
- Location pre-selected in every Book button on that page.
- Each location's Google Business Profile linking to its own page and booking link.
- Practitioners who work at several sites listing their days at each on their profile, with a Book button per location.
Testing the choice
On a phone: from a profile, tap Book, confirm the widget opens on that practitioner. From a location page, confirm the location is fixed. From a condition page, confirm the service is pre-selected and the listed practitioners' buttons work. Then the "first available" path. Monthly, because parameter behaviour changes with system updates.
