Booking is different for trades

A salon books a slot. A trade business usually cannot: most jobs need a quote first, the duration is unknown until someone has looked, and the schedule depends on where the last job was. So "booking system" for trades means job management software with a customer-facing front: a quote request form that takes photos, sometimes true online booking for standard jobs (a boiler service, a gutter clean), a customer portal for quotes and invoices, and dispatch and scheduling behind it. Here is how the common ones compare on what a website needs.

Jobber (US, CA, UK, AU)

Customer-facing: online booking for services you define with fixed durations and prices, a request form for everything else, both embeddable on your site or hosted. Client hub for quotes, approvals, invoices and payments. Photo upload on requests.

Behind: scheduling, dispatch, quoting, invoicing, payments, automated follow-ups, reviews requests.

Strengths: the most polished customer-facing layer; genuine online booking for standard jobs; strong US and Canadian presence. Watch: subscription per user tier rises with team size.

ServiceM8 (AU, NZ, UK, US)

Customer-facing: an online booking form (request-based, with optional time preferences), a client portal for quotes and invoices, and a website widget. Photo attachments.

Behind: job cards, scheduling, quoting, invoicing, forms and checklists, strong mobile app for the van.

Strengths: excellent on-site app, affordable, popular with Australian trades. Watch: online booking is request-based rather than live slots; the widget's styling is limited.

Tradify (NZ, AU, UK)

Customer-facing: an enquiry form for your site; a customer portal for quotes and invoices with online acceptance and payment.

Behind: quoting, scheduling, job tracking, timesheets, invoicing; integrates with accounting software well.

Strengths: simple, quote-focused, good for small teams. Watch: no live online booking; the website integration is a form.

Housecall Pro (US, CA)

Customer-facing: online booking with live availability for defined services, a request form, customer portal, review requests, and Google Local Services Ads integration.

Behind: scheduling, dispatch, estimates, invoicing, payments, marketing automation.

Strengths: strongest true online booking for home services in the US; good marketing tools. Watch: US-centric; price.

Simpro (AU, NZ, UK, US)

Customer-facing: a customer portal; online booking via integrations rather than native.

Behind: enterprise job management for larger contractors: projects, service, maintenance contracts, inventory.

Strengths: for firms with many staff and complex jobs. Watch: far more than a small trade business needs; website integration is secondary.

Others

Fergus (NZ, AU): quoting and job management with a customer portal. Workever, Commusoft (UK): service and maintenance scheduling with customer booking portals, strong for heating engineers. Zoho FSM, Kickserv, Service Fusion: various. Check each for a photo-capable request form and whether live booking exists.

Live booking or quote request?

Live booking suits jobs with known duration and price: annual boiler service, gas safety certificate, EICR, gutter clean, standard lock change, pest treatment. Jobber and Housecall Pro do this natively. The website's Book button for those services goes to live slots.

Quote request with photos suits everything else, which is most trade work. The website's form asks: what needs doing, where, when, and "send us photos", and it lands in the software as a request with the images attached, notifying the tradesperson's phone. Every system above handles this; the quality of the photo upload and the speed of the phone notification are what to compare.

Most trade sites want both: Book for the standard services, Get a quote for the rest, and Call for emergencies.

What the website needs from any of them

  1. Tap-to-call on every screen, above the fold. Emergencies do not fill in forms.
  2. A quote form that takes photos, embedded from the software or built on the site and forwarding to it, notifying a phone within a minute.
  3. Live booking for the standard services, deep-linked from their pages, where the software supports it.
  4. A customer portal link for existing customers to approve quotes and pay.
  5. Tracking: call clicks, quote submissions and bookings by page and town.
  6. Tested on a phone on a poor connection, because that is where your customers are.

Choosing

  • US or Canada, wanting true online booking and marketing tools: Jobber or Housecall Pro.
  • Australia or New Zealand, small team, best van app: ServiceM8.
  • UK or NZ, quote-led, small team, simple: Tradify.
  • UK heating and maintenance contracts: Commusoft or Workever.
  • Large contractor: Simpro.

Already on one that works? Stay. The website can make any of them produce jobs; switching is a project.

Where this sits

Wiring whichever software a trade business runs into the site, with tap-to-call first, a photo quote form that reaches the phone, live booking where it exists, and tracking on all three, is the core of what we build into trade business websites. The software is your choice; making it one tap from every page is ours.
