The shortlist, and the part they already agree on

Autoflow, Garage Hive, Shopmonkey, Tekmetric and Workshop Software are the systems independent workshops run. All five offer online booking that reads the vehicle from a registration, presents service types and time slots, and drops the result into the workshop diary.

That shared floor is the important thing, because it means the choice is almost never about whether a system can take a booking online. It is about how the diary behaves once a bay is full, and what the driver sees on a phone at half past nine at night.

No league table here, and here is why

A ranked list of garage software is close to useless to one garage. The system that suits a two-ramp workshop doing servicing and brakes is not the system that suits a six-bay operation running diagnostics, a courtesy fleet and collection rounds. Neither of them cares about the feature that decides it for a fast-fit chain.

So instead: the questions that separate these five for an independent garage. Put your own service list into a trial and answer them before you sign anything.

What happens to a plate it does not recognise?

Registration lookup is the reason online booking works for a garage at all — it saves the driver typing make, model, engine size and fuel. So find out what the flow does when the lookup returns nothing, or returns a variant that is wrong. Does the driver get a manual fallback and still book, or does the form dead-end? Every plate that dead-ends is a phone call you did not want.

Does the diary understand a bay rather than a person?

Most booking software is built around staff members. A workshop is constrained by ramps. A cambelt occupying one bay for most of a day and four half-hour jobs are not interchangeable, however many technicians are on shift. Ask what a bookable resource is in the system, whether a job type can carry a realistic duration, and whether it will stop taking work once the ramps are gone.

Can a service price change with engine size?

Your published numbers are only useful if the booking flow agrees with them. Check whether a service type can hold more than one price, keyed to what the lookup returned, and check who can change those prices. If updating a figure means a support ticket, the numbers on your site will drift out of date, and a driver quoted one thing on the page and another at the counter is the exact experience independents are trying to distance themselves from.

How does it record authorisation for extra work?

You strip a wheel, you find something else. The question is whether the system can send a driver the finding, the price and a request to approve it, and then keep the record of that approval against the job. Some do this as a core workflow, some do not do it at all, and a garage that has to manage it over text messages loses the paper trail exactly when it matters most.

Does the booking capture the practical answers?

Courtesy car, collection and delivery, or waiting on site: for a household with one spare car, that is the deciding question. Check whether the booking can offer those as options, whether a courtesy car can be treated as a finite resource rather than a tick box, and whether the address for a collection is captured at booking rather than chased afterwards.

Will it bring the car back next year?

The compounding value in garage software is not the first booking, it is the second. Ask what reminders it sends for services and tests, whether the message carries a link that rebooks in one tap, and whether you can see how many of last year's customers came back. A garage without that is re-buying the same customers every year.

Then test it on a phone in a car park

Whatever you shortlist, open the booking flow on a real phone on mobile data, standing outside, one-handed. Time it. Count the taps from the home screen to a confirmed slot. That number is what decides whether the software you chose ever produces a booking, and it is the only test on this page that takes two minutes.

Where this sits

Every independent garage website we build embeds whichever of these five you already run, wired to your diary, at a fixed price. For the build itself, see what a garage website costs, and for the reasons bookings are not arriving today, why your garage site gets no bookings.
