Clients for years

A pet business client is a dog that comes back every six weeks for a groom, every weekday for daycare, or every holiday for boarding, for the life of the pet. One new regular is worth a great deal over several years. The website question is how many new regulars it produces per month against what it costs. Here is how to tell.

The template

A pet theme or builder layout with your branding, a few photos of dogs, a contact form and a link to booking.

Cost: hundreds to low thousands.

Good at: existing; looking friendly.

Weak at: speed on a phone; prices that vary by size and coat (a single "from £X" or nothing); booking as a link out rather than embedded with pet details; vaccination and consent handled by phone afterwards; photos of dogs in general rather than your premises in particular; hosting often with the vendor.

The custom build

Built around how owners choose: services with a price matrix by size and coat as records; booking from your platform embedded and deep-linked per service, capturing the pet profile and vaccinations before arrival; a premises tour in real photos; a "what to bring" page; staff with their own animals; reviews near the buttons; fast on a phone; structured data for a local pet business; tracking; everything in your name.

Cost: mid four figures, fixed.

Good at: ranking for "[service] [town]", answering the price and vaccination questions before the phone rings, and booking with the pet's details captured.

Weak at: the invoice, and two to three weeks.

Where the extra clients come from

Prices by size. "How much is a full groom for a cockapoo" is the question every groomer's phone rings with. A site that answers it, by size and coat, converts the owner who would otherwise call three groomers and book the first to answer. A template's single price does not.

The premises tour. Owners of a daycare or boarding dog are handing over a family member. Real photos of your actual kennels, play areas, grooming room and the people in them are the most persuasive thing you can show. Stock puppies say nothing.

Service pages that rank. "Dog groomer [town]", "dog daycare [town]", "cat boarding near me", "puppy training classes". Separate searches; a page each.

Booking with the pet. Embedded booking that creates the pet profile and captures vaccinations means the first visit starts on time rather than with paperwork, and the owner felt organised from the start.

Speed. Owners search from the park on a phone.

The arithmetic

A groomer with a template site getting 300 visits a month, converting 3 percent to enquiries, half becoming regulars: four or five new regulars a month.

A custom site ranking for three services, answering prices by size, with a premises tour and embedded booking, might reach 500 visits at 7 percent: seventeen new regulars. Even at a third of the uplift, the additional regulars in the first quarter, each worth years of repeat visits, exceed the price difference between the builds.

When the template is right

  • A sole trader with a full book from referral.
  • A business about to move or sell.
  • A first-year business using the platform's page.

When the template is a leak

  • Owners phone to ask prices for their breed.
  • You want more daycare or boarding clients and the site has no premises photos.
  • The site takes over three seconds on a phone.
  • Vaccination and consent are collected by phone or on paper at the first visit.
  • The site is on a vendor's hosting.

Deciding

Three numbers: monthly visits, monthly enquiries or bookings from the site, and the lifetime value of a regular. Under 4 percent or over three seconds: a custom build pays back in months. Fast and converting: keep it and add a premises tour.

Our pet business sites are custom builds at a fixed price, with size-based prices, embedded booking with pet profiles, the premises tour and speed included, because that is the version that brings regulars.
