The question underneath the question

Nobody really wants to know whether to buy a template. They want to know whether a template will lose them the holiday bookings.

For most trades it would not. A plumber's template site is fine, because nobody is nervous about a plumber. Pet sitting is different. You are asking for a key to someone's front door and sole responsibility for an animal they love, usually while they are several countries away. That is a trust sale, and trust sales are where templates quietly fail.

Here is how the two options actually differ on the things that decide a sitting enquiry.

The trust page

Template: an about page. Your photo, a paragraph about loving animals since childhood, maybe a line saying "fully insured".

Custom: a page whose only job is the nervous reader. Insurance, named and current. Vetting checks, whichever apply where you work. Pet first aid. References. And the part almost every sitting site omits: exactly how keys are handled, from collection at the meet-and-greet to storage without an address attached to them, to return at the end.

This is the single biggest gap between the two. A template can hold that page, but templates are not sold with it, and nobody writes it unprompted.

Prices per visit type

Template: a services list with three bullet points and "contact for a quote".

Custom: editable records per visit type. A thirty minute cat visit, a longer dog visit, a puppy visit run more often, small animals, overnights, house sitting, holiday period surcharges if you apply them. Each with what is included, what is not, and any limits on animals or medication.

Owners planning a holiday are budgeting. A sitter who publishes a price gets compared on trust. A sitter who hides it gets compared on nothing, because the owner has already messaged three others.

Area pages

Template: one town named in the footer.

Custom: a page for each town and village you actually cover, each one honest about travel and each linked from the services. This is what "cat sitter near me" style searching rewards, and it is the difference between existing on the internet and being findable in the specific place the owner lives.

You can build these on a template, one at a time, by hand. Most people build two and stop.

Overnights and house sitting

Template: a bullet in a list.

Custom: separate pages, because they are separate decisions. An owner buying house sitting is buying an occupied house, not just a fed cat. The price, the arrangement, what you do during the day, whether you have your own animals, whether you use the kitchen. Different questions, different page.

What happens on a visit

Template: nothing.

Custom: a sample visit report. What lands on the owner's phone, with photos, at what point in the day. Combined with your software's report cards from Time To Pet, Pet Sitter Plus, Scout or Precise Petcare, this converts holiday enquiries better than any amount of design.

Booking

Template: a contact form that goes to an inbox you read between visits.

Custom: a meet-and-greet booking with a real time slot, plus a separate visible route for existing clients into your portal to request dates. New clients get the appointment they will actually take. Regulars stop messaging you at ten at night.

Cost and time, honestly

A template is a few hundred, plus your weekends. Two evenings on the theme, then the discovery that the price section will not hold your visit types, then the writing of a trust page you were not expecting to write. Live in a month, with the gaps above still open unless you fill them yourself.

A custom build is the band above, and it arrives with those gaps closed, tested on a phone, in your name, in three to four weeks of somebody else's time.

When a template is genuinely the right call

  • You are in your first season and still deciding whether sitting is the business.
  • You are full from word of mouth and your list is already as long as you can serve.
  • You cover one small area and take no holiday bookings from strangers.

Buy the template, put the trust facts and the prices on it yourself, and revisit in a year.

When it is not

  • You want holiday work, which is high value, planned weeks ahead and researched carefully.
  • You cover several towns and want to be found in each.
  • You are adding sitters and need each one to have a face and an area.
  • You have already lost enquiries to somebody whose site answered the insurance and key questions in writing.

The payback test

Take one week of holiday bookings. Count the enquiries that went quiet after your first reply. If more than a couple died at the price question or the insurance question, those are answers a custom site gives before the message is ever sent, and the arithmetic is not close.

Where this sits

A pet sitting business website from us is the custom option at a fixed price, with the trust page, visit type pricing, area pages, overnight and house sitting pages and meet-and-greet booking built in, and the same approach shapes the other pet business websites we make. The template is not the wrong answer. It is only the wrong answer once strangers are deciding whether to give you a key.
