Detailing Site: Template or Custom, Which Pays Back

A template detailing site versus a purpose-built one: what each costs, where the template breaks on the price table and gallery, and when it is right anyway.

The honest comparison

A template detailing site costs a few hundred and a weekend. A purpose-built one costs a few thousand and a fortnight. The question is which one gets a customer with a large estate and a filthy interior to book a full valet at eleven at night, without messaging you.

What a template does well

A Squarespace or WordPress theme gives you a fast, responsive site with your logo, your packages, your reviews and a booking link. It is findable on Google, which is already a large step up from an Instagram account with prices in the DMs.

If you are six months in and still deciding your package structure, that is the right place to start. Spend the difference on a polisher and a camera.

Where the template breaks

Three places, and all three are where the bookings are.

The price table. Detailing pricing is a grid: package level down one axis, vehicle size across the other. Small, medium, large, van, against maintenance wash, full valet, correction, coating. A template gives you a list of services with one price each, so you either publish a single price that is wrong for half your customers, or you publish "from" prices, which is the same as publishing nothing.

The grid also has to work on a phone, which is where nearly all of this traffic is, and a four-column table on a template collapses into something unreadable.

The gallery. In detailing the photographs are the product. They need to be before-and-after pairs, grouped by service, and they need to load fast. Template galleries are an uncompressed grid, which makes the page slow, which loses the visitor before the photographs have proved anything. And adding jobs to one is a chore, so it goes stale in month three.

Booking with deposits and add-ons. A booking link is easy. A booking flow where the customer picks a size, sees the price change, adds an engine bay clean, and pays a deposit is a configuration job in the tool plus deep links from each package on the site. Templates paste one link into the header and hope.

What custom actually means here

Not artwork. Structure.

  • The price table as records: package, level, vehicle size, price, duration. One edit changes it everywhere, and it lays out properly on a phone.
  • A gallery as records: service, vehicle, before image, after image, close-up. Filterable, compressed, and addable from your phone in two minutes.
  • Deep links from each package to the right service in Booksy, Fresha, Square, Acuity or Urable, with the size pre-selected where the tool allows it.
  • Mobile coverage areas as real pages.
  • Coating and correction pages with durability claims written once, honestly.

The payback arithmetic

A purpose-built site at $3,500 needs roughly two extra full valets a month to pay for itself inside a year. Most detailers who move from DM pricing to a published table see more than that, because the table converts the customer who was never going to ask.

The other half of the payback is your evenings. Answering "how much for a Qashqai" forty times a month is an hour a week you are not charging for, and the table ends it.

When the template is the right call

  • Under a year in, packages still moving.
  • Almost all your work comes from Instagram and repeat customers, and you like it that way.
  • Cash is tight enough that $3,500 is a real risk.

When to build properly

  • You are paying for advertising. Paid clicks into a template contact form waste most of themselves.
  • Weekend no-shows are costing you real money, which means you need deposits.
  • You sell coatings, which need proper pages and honest durability claims to justify the price.
  • You cover several towns and want to be found in each.

Where this sits

Our car detailing websites are the purpose-built version at a fixed price, with the size-based table, the records gallery and booking with deposits included. The wider comparison across the trade is on the automotive page. If a template is right for where you are now, start there and move when the price DMs become the bottleneck.
