A test is a commodity, so the booking is the product

Nobody chooses a test centre on quality. They choose whoever makes booking easy and the price obvious, within a few miles. If you are not getting bookings, one of these four is why.

Cause 1: booking takes more than three taps

A test booking should be registration, date, confirm. Every extra field loses a share of the people who started.

The symptom: a form asking for make, model, engine size, fuel type and mileage — all of which are derivable from the plate.

The change: registration lookup from your garage software. Autoflow, Garage Hive, Shopmonkey, Tekmetric and Workshop Software all expose it. Three taps is the target and it is achievable.

Cause 2: the fee is not stated

For a statutory test with a capped maximum fee, refusing to publish the number reads as though you are charging the cap. The driver assumes the worst and rings somewhere that published it.

The change: state the fee. If you discount when a test is booked alongside a service, put that on the same line — it is the cheapest upsell in the workshop.

Cause 3: nothing addresses the fear of a fail

This is the anxiety that stops the booking, and it is almost universally unaddressed. The driver is not worried about the test. They are worried about being told the car needs four hundred pounds of work it does not need.

The symptom: no page about fails, retests or how you advise.

The change: a fails and retests page — the retest rules, whether a retest is free or reduced, how quickly you can usually do repairs, and what you do when something is borderline. Write it as short questions and answers and link it from beside the booking button. Pair it with real photographs, accreditations, and live Google reviews. Reviews do more for this fear than any wording you can write yourself.

Cause 4: nothing brings the driver back in eleven months

A test is an annual, perfectly predictable repeat purchase. A centre without reminders re-buys every customer every year.

The change: turn on reminders in the software you already pay for, with one-tap rebooking in the message, and say on the site that you send them. This is the highest-return change on the list because it compounds.

Fix them in this order

Fee and three-tap booking first — they are what make you comparable. The fails page third, because it is one page against the largest objection. Reminders fourth, and they will still be earning in three years.

Where this sits

Our test centre websites ship with plate-lookup booking and the fee stated, at a fixed price. The audit version is the test centre checklist. What the scheme is called and how retests work varies by country, which the automotive page and the country pages cover.
